About Tea In Hokkaido Prefecture
Hokkaido’s harsh cold has long been considered unsuitable for tea cultivation. However, in 2015, tea store “Lupicia” launched the “Northernmost Tea” project in Niseko Town and has been working on production.
Meanwhile, herb cultivation thrives, taking advantage of the rich and expansive environment. Herbs ideal for herbal teas, such as chamomile, lavender, and mint, are cultivated here, with many grown using organic farming methods. In particular, the peppermint (hakka) from Kitami City, cultivated since 1902, is nationally renowned. At one point, its production volume was so significant that it accounted for 70% of the global market share.
Herbs grown in this cool climate region make it an area that cannot be overlooked as a key domestic producer of herbal teas.
