About Tea in Oita Prefecture

Oita Prefecture is located in northeastern Kyushu, a hilly region where forests cover approximately 70% of the land. Its mountainous and coastal areas intertwine, creating diverse climates.

Leveraging its warm climate and the temperature variations in the mountain valleys, steamed sencha, kabusecha, and traditional pan-fired tea have been produced here. In recent years, high-quality black tea produced in Kitsuki in the southern Kunisaki Peninsula and Yabakei in the north has also gained attention.

Large-scale tea plantations are rare; cultivation is primarily small-scale, utilizing the terrain’s contours and environment. This area also offers the chance to encounter expressive teas, each reflecting the unique character of its maker.
