About Tea In Miyazaki Prefecture
Miyazaki Prefecture is a region with limited flat land, as approximately 75% of its territory is covered by mountains and forests (Kyushu Mountains and Kirishima Volcanic Group). While prone to typhoon impacts and high precipitation, its climate features some of the nation’s highest levels of sunshine hours and clear days.
Major tea-producing areas include Hyūga City, Miyakonojo City, Kushima City, and Kawanami Town. Large-scale operations and mechanization have advanced here, placing the region among the nation’s top producers of rough tea.
Leveraging its warm climate, the region ships new tea starting in late April. It is also known for its traditional pan-fired tea, a specialty passed down in the Takachiho and Gokase areas. Many producers engage in organic cultivation, making this a diverse tea-growing region nurturing a variety of tea styles.
