About Tea in Yamaguchi Prefecture

Yamaguchi Prefecture is located at the westernmost tip of Honshu, facing the Seto Inland Sea to the south and the Sea of Japan to the north. The Chugoku Mountains traverse its central region, creating a rugged terrain.

From the mid-Edo period to the mid-Meiji period, tea known as “Bochocha” was produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture (formerly the Bocho region). Even today, Ono tea is produced in Ube City in the southwestern part of the prefecture, preserving the traditional light steaming method.

Furthermore, in cities like Yamaguchi City, Hofu City, and Hagi City, visitors can experience matcha culture through gardens and tea rooms. The region is also known as a production area for tea utensils, including Hagi ware.
