About Tea in Yamagata Prefecture
Yamagata Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region, encompassing both inland basins and coastal areas along the Sea of Japan. Approximately 85% of its land area consists of mountainous terrain.
In the Shonai region of the prefecture’s northwest, initiatives like tea cultivation at the Matsugaoka Reclamation Site and the Mikawa Town specialty “Shonai Barley Tea” are well-known. Health teas such as persimmon leaf tea are also produced here.
In recent years, unique products utilizing local specialties have emerged, such as genmaicha made with the prefecture’s branded rice, “Tsuyahime.”
