About Tea in Gifu Prefecture

The northern and eastern parts of the prefecture are home to the 3,000-meter-class peaks of the Northern and Central Alps. Flowing from these mountains, the Ibi, Nagara, and Kiso rivers shape the prefecture’s rich natural environment.

Nurtured by these mountains and waters, Gifu Prefecture produces teas with distinct regional character. These include Ibi tea and Shirakawa tea, known collectively as Mino tea, as well as “Kashimo tea,” made exclusively from the first flush of tea leaves grown in the headwaters of the Shirakawa River. Additionally, Ena tea, Tsubo tea, and Gujo bancha are cherished as teas rich in the local flavor of the prefecture.
