About Tea In Shizuoka Prefecture

Shizuoka Prefecture is a region where the landscape changes dramatically over short distances, featuring Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps in the north, the Mikata-hara and Makinohara plateaus in the center, and a coastline in the south.

Tea production in Shizuoka Prefecture is said to have begun in the Kamakura period. It continued through the Edo period as “tea supplied to the shogun” and into the Meiji period as a valuable export commodity.

The prefecture accounts for approximately 40% of Japan’s total tea plantation area and is home to many production regions, including Makinohara, Kawane, Motoyama, and Kakegawa. Both mountainous and flatland areas have developed into distinctive production regions, yielding a wide variety of tea types and processing methods.
