About Tea In Kagoshima Prefecture

Kagoshima Prefecture is home to rugged mountainous terrain and plateaus, as well as 28 inhabited islands, including Tanegashima, Yakushima, and the Amami Islands.

Blessed with a warm climate and fertile soil rich in volcanic ash, the prefecture boasts one of the highest tea production volumes in the country.

Well-known varieties include Chiran tea (Minamikyushu City), Kirishima tea, and teas produced around Shibushi. The prefecture produces a diverse range of teas, centered on deep-steamed sencha, as well as organically grown teas and Japanese black tea.
