About Tea In Kanagawa Prefecture
Kanagawa Prefecture is divided into an eastern region, which includes urban areas such as Yokohama and Kawasaki, and a western region rich in natural beauty, featuring the Tanzawa and Hakone mountain ranges.
Tea produced in the mountainous regions and the Ashigara Plain, where there is a significant temperature difference between day and night, is called “Ashigara-cha.” It has a history of being introduced as a reconstruction measure for mountain villages affected by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
Production continues as the prefecture’s representative tea, having won first prize at the National Tea Competition in 1963.
