About Tea In Kumamoto Prefecture
Kumamoto Prefecture is located in central Kyushu, with forests covering approximately 60% of its land area. It is characterized by its geography, surrounded by Mount Aso and the Kyushu Mountains.
It is one of Japan’s largest tea-producing regions in terms of cultivation area, producing steamed gyokuro, sencha, and kamairicha, among other varieties.
Tea is cultivated in regions such as Hitoyoshi-Kuma, Yamato, Kikuchi, and Ashikita. In addition to kamairicha and sencha, black tea production has also emerged in recent years.
