About Tea In Niigata Prefecture
Niigata Prefecture is located on the Sea of Japan coast in central Honshu and is characterized by its vast plains. It is also known as one of Japan’s leading rice-producing regions.
“Murakami Tea,” produced in Murakami City in the northern part of the prefecture, is considered one of the northernmost regions for commercial tea cultivation. With a history spanning approximately 400 years, it has been cultivated in a cold climate. Black tea, which was produced for export during the Meiji era, has also begun to be cultivated again in recent years.
