About Tea in Osaka Prefecture
Osaka Prefecture includes Sakai City, associated with Sen no Rikyū, and has developed since ancient times as a merchant town. It is known as a hub for distribution and consumption, attracting high-quality tea leaves from all over Japan, including Kyoto and Nara, and home to many long-established tea wholesalers dating back to the Edo period.
Moreover, the tea ceremony culture cherished by Kansai business leaders and connoisseurs has produced exquisite tea utensils and artworks. Today, visitors can still experience aspects of this culture at museums and traditional restaurants throughout the prefecture.
Osaka is less a tea-producing region than a place where teas from all over Japan converge, pass through human hands, and spread further. It stands as one of the cities supporting Japan’s tea culture.
