About Tea in Saitama Prefecture
Saitama Prefecture features a terrain where elevation gradually decreases from the Chichibu Mountains (around 2,000 meters) in the west toward the east, creating a region where mountains, plateaus, and plains coexist. Major rivers like the Arakawa and Tone flow through it, fostering a long history of agriculture and urban areas coexisting.
The tea representing this region is “Sayama Tea.” Produced primarily in the Sayama Hills, as well as in Iruma City and Tokorozawa City, its rich flavor is born from the cool climate and a unique, strong firing process. Alongside Uji tea and Shizuoka tea, it is counted among Japan’s three most famous teas.
“Shizuoka for color, Uji for fragrance, Sayama for the finishing touch of taste.”
Such words are still passed down today, reflecting how deeply Sayama tea values “taste” as a tea of this land.
