About Tea In Shiga Prefecture
Shiga Prefecture is a region centered around Lake Biwa and surrounded by mountains, featuring a continental climate characterized by muggy summers and harshly cold winters.
It is also known as the “birthplace of Japanese tea,” as Saichō is said to have brought tea seeds back from Tang China in 805. In the mountainous areas of the southern part of the prefecture, there is a significant temperature difference between day and night, and tea cultivation has continued in this environment.
It is a historic production area for “Omi tea,” including Asamiya tea (one of Japan’s five major teas, from Shigaraki-cho, Koka City), Tsuchiyama tea (from Tsuchiyama-cho, Koka City), and Mandokoro tea (from Higashiomi City).
